It doesn’t seem that long ago that Mario Balotelli was one of the most exciting names in world football; his promise on the pitch was surpassed only be the headline-grabbing tales of a young lad seemingly untouched by the need to live a professional life. He was a breathe of fresh air in an otherwise bland arena of modern footballers. But it’s all starting to get too much.
Not-so-Super Mario has been back in the headlines today for controversial comments about parent club Liverpool. Essentially, the Italian has labelled his said that he doesn’t want an Anfield return, stating that he was never happy at Liverpool. Boo fucking hoo.
The 25-year-old has barely done anything since the summer of 2012. Manchester City gave up on him before Milan bit their hands off when Liverpool came knocking. He’s scored two league goals in two years, yet is still being paid millions and has the audacity to moan. And if he thinks he’s unhappy, he should try putting himself in the shoes of a Liverpool fan. I can’t imagine too many of them have been thrilled by the returns seen from a man that was signed to be Luis Suarez’s replacement.
Most lads would give anything to possess that level of natural talent. But he’s wasted it. He’s finally performing at the San Siro because he wants a contract, which only further highlights the player he is. Balotelli is pretty much the poster boy for modern day stars that are more focused on the lifestyle than the pitch. After initially finding his explosive personal life quite entertaining, it now just adds fuel for reasons to dislike him. If he was that serious about earning a move away from Liverpool, he should’ve performed during his loan. Sadly, a man that was handed everything from a young age hasn’t developed the appreciation of hard graft.
Balotelli cannot blame anyone else for his descent into obscurity, and it’s about time it zipped it and focused on letting his feet do the talking.
At least the fact Liverpool won’t want his disruptive character back means he’ll get his wish of an Anfield exit.
