We bring you a mid week Goals Galore treble that includes the bright lights and superstars of the Champions League, supplemented by a side plate of lower league domestic action is a dream week here at GGT.
We are taking full advantage of the delights on offer by picking the three fixtures below. Take a look before the goals go in!
Zenit St Petersburg v Atletico Madrid – 5.00pm Tuesday
First up is the late afternoon/early evening kick off in Group G between second placed Zenit St Petersburg and high flying league leaders Atlético Madrid who have travelled from the capital of Spain. Zenit know victory here may well book them that spot in the knockout stages with just a game to go, and they will do everything they can to bag those three points. Atlético have won 14 of their last 16 games in all competitions and not many will be betting against them here.
Zenit drew 1-1 in their last Champions League tie at home to Porto which we had in our treble and we have included them once more in an equally important match. The table toppers in the Russian Premier Liga go into the match with a full squad to pick from and they have plenty of talent to find the net with Brazilian, Hulk leading the line. Supporting the front man are other goal scorers including, Arshavin, Danny, Kerzhakov and Witsel.
Atlético Madrid have been the outstanding side in this group, they have already qualified in first place but will want to carry on their 100% record which has seen them win four from four, just Bayern München, also boast the feat. The reverse fixture in Spain finished 3-1 so we know that Madrid can unlock the Zenit defence with ease but with Russian club being desperate for a result i cannot see them conceding without scoring. Atlético couldn’t be more confident after thrashing Getafe 7-0 at the weekend. Bring on the goals!
Dortmund v Napoli- 7.45pm Tuesday
What a tie we have waiting for us in this tricky group which also includes Arsenal and Marseille. Dortmund have home advantage as Napoli visit and with just two games left in this league stage every point is vital. Dortmund will have to get the previous weekend out of their minds after a devastating 3-0 defeat, home to Bayern München on Saturday which now means they have lost three in a row. When these two last met Napoli got the result, a 2-1 victory back in Italy.
Dortmund will see this as a must win game in order to nullify the 3 point advantage Napolihave over them. Unfortunately for the German side they have big players out due to recent injuries including Mats Hummels, Marcel Schmelzer and Neven Subotić. These are all defensive losses and Jurgen Klopp may have to accept that his side may concede a few if they are to go on and win. Importantly, players like Robert Lewandowski are available and we know goals should not be a problem.
Napoli too have their own goal scorers in numbers, José Callejón for example has eight Champions League goals to his name. Gonzalo Higuaín and Marek Hamsik are also not shy of finding the net. The Italians can guarantee their place in the knockout stages by just picking up a point on Tuesday and that will motivation enough to beat this desperate Dortmund side. I think we will witness plenty of goals in this one!
Nuneaton v Alfreton Town – 7.45pm Tuesday
Our final destination is down to non league in the Conference which really is a light year away from the Champions League. Nuneaton sitting in 7th host 5th placed Alfreton Town where both teams are having a great start to their seasons and just a point separates the pair. We are expecting a thriller in this lower league pick.
One stat which drew me to this game particularly is Nuneaton’s home record of scoring and conceding. Eight out ten of their home fixtures in the league have seen both teams score and they have yet to fail to find the back of the net on home turf.
There isn’t just one star of the goals show here in this fixture, whenever Alfreton are involved, goals are also on the cards with three quarters of their league ties fulfilling the over 2.5 goals market this season, and in their previous eight ties there has been a huge 27 goals!! With both teams scoring and conceding so often i can see exactly the same happening on Tuesday evening. Get on!
