Newcastle v Sunderland
3.00pm Saturday
Both teams to score odds – 31/40 – BetVictor
Newcastle are all ready and set for revenge against a Sunderland side that came out on top in the reverse fixture. Both managers know that a victory would mean a lot to the supporters and this is the most important tie in the fixture calendar for the fans. Defeat is not an option expect, cards, carnage and goals!
Sunderland took all the glory when Newcastle visited the Stadium of Light earlier in the season which circumvented from the plight Paulo Di Canio was sending the Black Cats, as they continued to spiral down the table. Times have changed as has the manager, Gus Poyet has brought a far more balanced system of play to the North East and results have improved significantly. Sunderland are unbeaten in five away games which makes this derby a tough one to call for me but what does look good is BTTS.
Many have Newcastle down for a win, despite losing influential midfielder Yohann Cabaye to PSG this week. Luuk De Jong has already come in and before the window slams shut there is expected to be even more business, so don’t expect the mood to be too dour at St James’ Park.
At home the Toon will score and are expected to by the fans after failing to deliver at the Stadium of Light earlier on in the season. I can see the Magpies getting an early goal here and stamping their authority on the game from the off. I am confident Newcastle will concede as they have done in each of their previous six home games.
Fulham v Southampton
3.00pm Saturday
Both teams to score odds – 11/17 – BetVictor
The last time these two met earlier on in the season at St Mary’s, you wouldn’t have seen a more one sided affair. Southampton comfortably gained a 2-0 victory with Fulham getting just the single shot on target. Awful. Now Martin Jol has gone, Fulham look far more dangerous with the ball, despite not patching up the worst back four in the division and are always safe to concede.
Fulham’s defence very much resembles a block of Swiss cheese and with the club looking to concentrate on late January signings further up the field in Greek striker Kostas Mitroglou, I cannot lee that leaky defence showing any signs of repair. The Whites are viewing this match as a “must win” game, with many pundits predicting Fulham to finish rock bottom of the league come May. If they are to defy the critics they need to win nearly all of their home games starting against Southampton on Saturday. The Cottagers have found the back of the net each and every home game and they should do so once more.
Southampton held Arsenal to a draw earlier in the week in a goal thriller and they really have been one of the highlights of this season. The style of football is innovative and exciting and a variety that gets results. The Saints have enough quality to win here and with Fulham’s endeavour I can see this being close. Fulham have conceded in each of their previous eight matches and Southampton have found the back of the net in every one of their last five away ties, so it looks like we could be in store for goals!
Bournemouth v Leicester City
3.00pm Saturday
Both teams to score odds – 11/13 – BetVictor
Eight points clear at the top of the Championship is Leicester City. It really does look like their year. Bournemouth too, are enjoying a great season after promotion from League One. Many expected a rather long season for the South Coast outfit but they are sitting happily in mid table, ten points from the play offs and ten points from the relegation slots.
So who are going to stop Leicester City? Eight matches in a row have resulted in victory for the Foxes and considering we are only asking for a goal from them for our treble, it looks pretty much nailed on. The Blues have scored in each of the last 13 matches as well and there is no team on better form right now. I quite fancy Leicester to win this as many will, so will certainly be expecting a goal or two but it wouldn’t surprise me if they drop their first points for a while either.
As already mentioned, Bournemouth will be very happy with how their season has progressed where they haven’t feared any opposition, so do not expect any parking of the bus on Saturday. The Cherries top scorer Lewis Grabban is getting back into his groove which is a huge boost considering the striker has already contributed 12 goals to Bournemouth’s successful campaign. The past week has seen good performances too, despite losing 2-0 last weekend to Liverpool the result flattered the Premier League side and on Tuesday evening they hosted Huddersfield Town and picked up a very nice 2-1 victory. Being on good recent form as they are, i can see Bournemouth scoring and maybe more.
