The BTTS Coupon – Saturday 9th August
The waiting is finally over as the English Football League returns this weekend. Whilst clubs up and down the country will be praying for three points, all we’re looking for is goals.
There is another week to wait until the Premier League season begins but with all 72 Football League teams in action over the weekend we’ve got plenty of options available. The opening day can always serve up the odd surprise but we’re backing these six teams all to find the net.
This week’s BTTS treble is placed with BetVictor and offers odds of 6.25/1. Alternatively, add a further two selections and qualify for the ‘Back of the Net’ acca insurance.
Let’s hope the opening weekend will be kind.

Huddersfield Town V AFC Bournemouth
BTTS is 8/11 with BetVictor Last season’s Championship was a truly fascinating league and one which was packed with goals. We’re backing the theme of goals to continue throughout 2014/15, starting with this opening day contest at the John Smith’s stadium. The Cherries enjoyed a fantastic first season in the Championship and Eddie Howe’s side very nearly made a late push for the play-offs. Despite their obvious disappointment of falling just short, they can be optimistic heading into the new campaign and are certainly capable of getting a result against Huddersfield.
Bournemouth had a knack for finding the net towards the closing stages of last season and will be determined to keep that run going into 2014/15.
Meanwhile, Huddersfield are also looking to improve after an indifferent but satisfactory 2013/14. A 17th-place finish for the Terriers wasn’t fantastic by any means but does give them a platform from which to build on. The one thing they do have going in their favour is goals.
Mark Robins’ side hit an impressive 58 goals last season, but were let down by a defensive record of 65 conceded. They were involved in their fair share of thrilling matches last term and they are definitely one of the more exciting teams to watch for the neutral.
We would expect both teams to open their scoring accounts here.
Barnsley V Crawley Town
BTTS is @ 9/10 with BetVictor Our second selection comes from Oakwell as recently relegated Barnsley take on John Gregory’s Crawley Town.Despite their valiant efforts, the Tykes could not retain their Championship status last season and that largely came down to their poor defensive record. Whilst the level of competition will be decreased in League One, the hosts may still struggle for clean sheets.
A 3-2 home defeat to QPR on the final day of 2013/14 was pretty indicative of Barnsley’s campaign and the fact their past three pre-season friendlies all ended in BTTS winners only further enhances our belief in this selection.
Barnsley will be expected to fight for promotion, though, and goals should come quite regularly for the Yorskiremen.
Creepy Crawley might not have been the most prolific team in League One last term but the added incentive of a new campaign, along with the fact they’ll be looking to take advantage of a vulnerable Danny Wilson side, could enable the visitors to score.
We would edge towards a home win at Oakwell but do think they’ll have to score at least twice to gain the three points.
Northampton Town V Mansfield Town
BTTS is 9/10 with BetVictor League Two side Northampton Town really struggled in 2013/14 but managed to retain their league status by the skin of their teeth and now Chris Wilder’s men will be looking to kick on in the coming months.Wilder bizarrely quit Oxford United to join the struggling Cobblers last December and must see a bright future for the Sixfields club. Goals were difficult to come by for the hosts last term as they mustered a very modest tally of 42 in 46 matches. However, they can be confident about enjoying a more productive time in the final third against Mansfield Town.
The Stags may have ended their maiden voyage back in the Football League with a very respectable 11th-place finish but it is worth noting that Paul Cox’s side shipped 58 goals over the course of the campaign – that’s one more than the Cobblers.
Last season’s corresponding fixture ended in a 1-1 draw. We’re predicting that both teams will find the net again here.
