Brighton & Hove Albion V Sheffield Wednesday
BTTS & Brighton Win @ 18/5 with Coral Our first selection comes from the Championship as Brighton & Hove Albion start the new season by welcoming Sheffield Wednesday to the Amex.Goals were a common feature for the Seagulls last term, particularly towards the end as four of their final five matches ended in BTTS winners. We don’t think that a change of manager will put an end to that sequence.
Former Liverpool defender Sami Hyypia will be buzzing for his first taste of management in England and will be determined to prove himself after some shady treatment by German outfit Bayer Leverkusen. An opening day triumph would certainly help win the fans over and a home fixture against the Owls offers a great opportunity to do that.
Brighton are a little lightweight in terms of attacking numbers but in Chris O’Grady and Craig Mackail-Smith they do boast some real talent.
Stuart Gray’s Owls will be hopeful of a big season but they would probably settle for staying up once more and we cannot see them winning this tricky opening day fixture. However, Wednesday did score in last year’s visit to Brighton and we think they’ll achieve that feat again on Saturday – unfortunately, though, it may not be enough for a share of the spoils.
Rochdale V Peterborough United
BTTS & Peterborough Win @ 18/5 with Coral League One new-boys start their campaign with a home match against high-scoring Peterborough United and we’re anticipating plenty of action at Spotland.Peterborough have been a favourite for BTTS punters for a long time now and we think that they’ll continue to be included in thousands of slips across the country. Posh scored 72 times en route to the play-offs last term but did ship 58 at the other end too.
Meanwhile, Rochdale hit an impressive 69 goals as they secured the third and final automatic promotion berth from League Two. The step up may come as a reality check for the Dale and they won’t be reaching that milestone in 2014/15, but there is no reason that they can’t continue to find the net regularly and that should certainly be the case at home.
These two last met in 2010/11 with both teams failing to keep a single clean sheet between them. Although the personnel has seen a huge change, we think that theme of goals will continue here. However, we’re backing Posh to claim the points.
Exeter City V Portsmouth
BTTS & Portsmouth Win @ 15/4 with Coral After an indifferent 2013/14, Portsmouth FC enter the new campaign as the pre-season favourites for the League Two title and Pompey will be desperate to begin their ascent up the Football League this term.It is easy to forget that the club were playing European football just half a decade ago and their plight has been one of the saddest stories in the domestic game. However, they began to show positive signs in the second half of last season and recovered from an abysmal start to finish 13th. They’ll be desperate to do much better in 2014/15, starting with this trip to St James’ Park.
Pompey ended last season with a flurry of goals at either end as their final two matches ended 3-3 and 4-4 respectively. In addition to that, both head-to-head meetings with Exeter ended with both teams on the scoresheet and goals are likely once more in this opening day contest.
Exeter finished 2013/14 in 16th-place but were able to score 54 times from their 46 matches and will be confident of opening their account on home soil. However, they did finish last term with a negative goal difference and we think that will be the manner in which their season starts here.
Both of last year’s meetings were exciting contests and that should be a continuing feature on Saturday. However, it is the visitors who harbour the much greater ambitions for the season ahead and we’re backing them to grab the perfect start with an away victory.
